I get a lot of questions from photographers about how I got started, what I use, how I learned, where I shoot, and more! I'm not the greatest at keeping secrets, so lucky you! I also strongly believe in community over competition--- I want you to succeed! Below you will find common questions I get asked by photographers along with some affiliate links of products, classes, and more that I have used and believe in!
Looking back, even as a child I was taking pictures of my family. I took classes in high school working with film, did a couple of photography internships, and started doing sessions for free or cheap. Everyone starts somewhere, so just begin and watch as you get better and better!
I shoot Canon, even back when doing film. I shoot with a Canon 7dMiii or Canon 5dMiii. I have a Canon 50 mm 1.8 and a Sigma Art 35 1.4. My two favorite lenses! If I need a zoom lens I'll usually rent a 24-70 or 70-200.
I'm not one to hide my locations unless it is private property that I have had to get special permission to use. The best place to find out locations I have shot at is to read the blog post associated with the images or look at my locations on my Instagram photos. A fun thing to do is drive around and find special spots you love!
I do the majority of my editing using Lightroom. It helps me keep my work consistent throughout a session and with each session. I use Photoshop for detailed edits like blemishes.
In high school I learned to use Photoshop. In 2017 I learned to use Lightroom, which has been wonderful because it cut my editing time by more than half, allowing me to get my clients their images in a short turnaround time. I took the Lightroom Course for Photographers by Kylee Ann. Highly recommend!
This is a constant battle! Algorithums online are constantly changing making it harder to market yourself. The biggest is by word of mouth. I do offer clients a referral program--- win-win! Kylee Ann also offers some amazing marketing courses! She seriously knows her stuff and wants you to succeed, too!
I have two go-to places--- Farr's Jewelry and Camera in Ogden, UT and Pictureline in SLC, UT. I also have my lenses calibrated here, drop my camera off to be cleaned, and buy supplies like CF and SD cards.
If I'm not delivering images via a beautiful, custom USB, I'm delivering them via online gallery. I have loved using Shootproof. I also do my contracts for clients via Shootproof. I use Hootsuite or Planoly to schedule posts at once for periods of time, giving time back in my life for my family.
I do! It's amazing how great your images look if sized properly! I use BlogStomp to size my images for my blog, FB pages, and even IG!
